Views From China
Tim Zachernuk
The rapid development of China in the past 30 years has been a phenomenon rarely, if ever, witnessed before in history. Given the increasingly large role that China is playing in the world, it is important that people outside of the country have some understanding of the country. But trying to understand China is a tremendous challenge due to the its size, complexity, diversity and its unique culture and history.
I hope that I can make some small contribution towards an improved understanding of China by showing something of the diversity of the country. Since 1995 I have been living and working in various parts of China. My work takes me to remote rural areas rarely visited by foreigners. The China portrayed on television, described by journalists or seen on tourist excursions doesn't begin to capture the reality of the country as lived by its 1.3 billion people. I don't aspire to fully describe the country, but I hope that I can provide a few insights into the diversity and wonders of the country.
